How to Use FTP to Transfer Files to and from Your Website

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol". It is used to transfer files from your hard drive to your web server or vice versa.
 

Where do I get an FTP client (program)?
We recommend WS-FTP, which is available free from download.com. Do a search for WS_FTP or Winsock FTP. Download and install the software and then follow the directions below.

How do I set up my FTP client?
When you first run WS-FTP, a dialogue box comes up titled

 

Session Properties. Click the button that says New to clear out all the text so you may enter your own settings. Using the information sent to you with your login details, fill out the text fields.
 

 

Profile Name: Can be anything you like. Example: Bold Print Design might be the profile name when connection to www.boldprintdesign.com.

 

Host Name/Address: Here you will put your domain name (yourname.com) or your IP address (example: 204.143.250.10).

 

Host Type: leave as Automatic detect.

 

User ID: Enter your ftp user name here. Your user ID is usually your domain name with no period, i.e. yournamecom

 

Password: Enter your password in this field. Check the box labeled

 

Save Pwd if you do not want to have to enter your password each time you wish to log on.

 

Click on the button labeled Apply, and your profile is saved. Click the OK button to log on.
