How to Set Up Outlook Express
to Collect Your Email
When accessing your email from a standard location, like
home or office, it is best to use an email processing
system, like Microsoft Outlook. Outlook Express is also a
good program and is available for free download.
The reason why it is better to use an email processing
system instead of the web based email on a regular basis is
that the web based email system is subject to the quirks of
any website, and if you are composing a long email and then
your page accidentally refreshes or your connection is lost,
you can lose the email that you have typed. It can be
frustrating, but can be resolved by composing your emails in
Outlook or Eudura or something similar, and then sending
them this way.
HOW TO:Download the
software
If you have not done so already, download Microsoft Outlook
Express from
www.microsoft.com and install it to a directory on your
hard drive. If you have Internet Explorer, you most likely
have Outlook Express installed already. If you have
Microsoft Office, you most likely have the full version of
Outlook already.Outlook varies slightly in setting up
procedures, but it is very similar.
Run Outlook Express by clicking on its
icon.
Creating a New Mail Account
Click Tools from the top menu.
Click Accounts.
Click Add and then click Mail.

Display Name
Enter the name you want your email to appear from. Ex:
John Smith or Johnny S. or John at Bold Print Design.
E-Mail Address
Type in your email address. Ex:
username@yourdomain.com

POP3 and SMTP Servers
For your POP3 and SMTP servers (incoming and outgoing mail),
type in mail.yourdomain.com.

Logon Information
For your username, type it in as follows: username@yourdomain.com
Your password is the password you were assigned when you
signed up for hosting.
Server Authentication
Go to Tools from the
top menu, then go to Accounts. Click on the newly created
mail account and then click on Properties.
Account Profile Name
Give your account profile a name. Most of the time, the
default name is fine (mail.yourdomain.com). The default can only be a problem if
you have more than one account on the same server.
This name
can be whatever you want that will allow you to remember
what account it is you are checking email in. For example:
“Susie’s Email” or “Bobs Work Email Account”.

Go to the Servers
tab, and there will be a checkbox that says "My server
requires authentication". This box should be checked.

Verifying Port Numbers
The last thing that needs to be done is verifying that
you have the correct outgoing and incoming ports. The
outgoing port should be port 25, and the incoming port
should be port 110. Also, the checkboxes that say "This
server requires a secure connection (SSL)" under both
outgoing and incoming mail should be unchecked.

One important one to look into is the
option to “Leave all messages on the server” – this way,
when you check your email at home, it will leave a copy of
the emails on the main server, and then when you go to work
and check your email, it will download it to your office
computer as well. Also, if your computer crashes and you
lose all of the data on your hard drive, you will still be
able to log into your mailbox online and retrieve your old
messages.
Click Finish, and you are ready to start using Outlook
Express.
