How to Make Minor Edits to Your
Website Yourself
Every website we create at Bold Print Design Studio can be
edited in Microsoft FrontPage. If making minor edits to your
website (slight text changes, replacing an image, etc.) will
be a regular part of your website activity, you might want
to consider purchasing the software and making these edits
yourself.
For a fee, we will purchase the software
and come to your location for a hands-on tutorial. We'll
install the software for you, and show you how to do all of
the steps below. You can then refer to this page for
assistance in the future.
If you are a little more computer-savvy,
this page may be all you need. Beware, however, in getting
in over your head. Always create page back-ups if you are
not entirely confident in your abilities. Fixing your errors
is something we do have to bill for.
1- Install Front Page on your computer.
2- Open Front Page.
3- Open your website remotely. Go to
File>Open Site. In the box at the bottom where is says "site
name" type in the URL of your website...
http://www.yourdomain.com.
4- Enter your username and password when
prompted.
5- This will open your website in the
Front Page application. It may take a while as you are now
working remotely from the server computer. When it is
complete you will see a list of folders and files on the
left, and a major part of the screen on the right will be
blank.
6- On the list of files on the left,
double click on the page/s you wish to open and edit. The
page will open and display in the blank area on the right.
(Again, all processes may take a while depending on your
hard drive speed, your internet connection speed, etc.)
7- When you see the page open on the
right, make any changes you need to the text.
Highlight old text, delete or edit as necessary. Under
“Format” in the top menu bar you can format font, paragraph
and other attributes. This all works very similarly to
Microsoft Word.
8- To insert an image, click on
Insert>Picture>From File. Browse to the location on your
hard drive where you have the image, and click to select it.
This will place the image on your website. Click "Save" to
save the page, and it will collect the image and save it
within the site on the server. Designate a location to save
the image in (usually in the images folder of the site) and
rename the file if needed.
You can modify the image in FrontPage.
Click on the image to bring up tab "handles" little black
dots at the corners of the image. Click to drag the image to
make it smaller or larger. You can also right-click the
image, and select "Picture Properties". Here you can modify
the image.
You want to keep in mind that you are
working online and want your website to download quickly and
efficiently. You should prepare your images for web viewing
by reducing file size, using a web safe color palette, and
save as a jpg or gif as is most appropriate. If you do not
have the software to do this, I would suggest letting us do
it for you. Your images should be prepared for online
viewing to save on page download time.
9- To add a hyperlink to text or
image, simply select the text or image that you want to use
as the link, and right click. Select "Hyperlink Properties".
This will bring up a box where you can enter the destination
page. For example, if you have text or an image that says
"Click here to learn more", select the text or image, right
click, select Hyperlink Properties, and then enter in the
URL of the page you would like the user redirected to when
they click that text or image.
Be careful! You are working remotely
and as you make changes, it is changing it on the internet.
There is no “undo” once you have made changes.
